Luke Shaw makes admission about 'stupid' Manchester United Champions League claim

Luke Shaw admits he understands why some supporters might label him 'stupid' for believing Manchester United can still win the Champions League this season.

United have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign and have already been knocked out of the League Cup and FA Cup following dismal home defeats.

Coupled with their underwhelming Premier League form, it means United's only remaining hope of silverware is with the Champions League, where they look improbable winners.

United continue their European campaign next week when they travel to face Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their round of 16 tie, and Shaw is confident his side can cause a shock in the tournament.

While the England international is well aware of just how difficult it will be to conquer Europe for the first time in 14 years, he insists the squad are confident in their ability to do so.

“This is the crunch time of the season and it is very important in the league to get some momentum," Shaw stated. "As a team we believe we can win the Champions League.

“Not many people on the outside will think it and some will think I’m stupid for saying that.

“But we have that belief and confidence that we can win it.

“I’m sure everyone in this dressing room — the players, staff and management — all have that belief that we can.

“Now we need to pick some momentum up, get results and keep playing well.”
