Luke Shaw is confident Manchester United will be a “different side” on the ball with Andre Onana in goal.
The 27-year-old arrived from Inter Milan for a £47m fee, replacing David de Gea who left United at the end of his contract earlier this summer after 12 years at the club.
While De Gea picked up the Golden Glove in his final season at Old Trafford, the second time he won the award, the Spaniard was less than convincing with the ball at his feet, struggling to help the team build up from the back.
It is no surprise that Erik ten Hag has turned to a familiar face in Onana, who he worked with at Ajax. The United boss has already spoken of the “out-playing qualities” the Cameroon goalkeeper will bring to the side.
Onana made his debut for the club in the pre-season friendly defeat to Real Madrid, before featuring in the second-half against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday night. Shaw was involved in both of those games and believes Onana’s arrival will prove hugely significant in terms of the team’s style of play.
“They’re very different keepers,” the United left-back told Sky Sports when comparing Onana and De Gea.
“First and foremost David last season, and the seasons he was here, he was amazing. Massive legend to this club, won the Golden Glove last season. We’re sad to see him go, but we wish him the best and hope it goes well.
“With the new addition we have, [Onana] will bring different qualities to what David had. You’ll see a different side now with building up from the back, he brings a bit more composure to that.
“He suits the exact way the manager wants, I’ve been really impressed so far.”
