While the matchup between the Mavericks and Spurs on Wednesday night featured an arena that was packed beyond its official capacity and filled with hype surrounding Victor Wembanyama’s NBA debut, it was Luka Dončić who stole the show. But even after a 126-119 victory and 33-point triple-double, the 24-year-old Dallas star had nothing but the highest regard for his 7’4” counterpart.
“He’s going to be amazing. He already is. The size obviously, like everybody talks, the way he moves for 7’5”, 7’6”. … He moves incredible. He moves like a point guard almost. It’s pretty amazing to see. Like Grant [Williams] said, he’s going to have a great future, and he’s going to be amazing to watch,” Dončić told reporters after the game about Wembanyama.
Wembanyama finished the night with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting while pulling down five rebounds with two assists, two steals and one block. He also committed five turnovers, but the biggest issue the rookie ran into was foul trouble, which left him sidelined for large portions of the second half.
As for Dončić, he recorded 33 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists (all game highs) as he shot 13 of 25 from the field.
