Former Barcelona and Liverpool star Luis Suarez has opened the door for a potential move to Major League Soccer by claiming it's his 'most likely' destination.
Suarez signed for boyhood club Nacional in the summer after leaving Atletico Madrid, but the striker confirmed his departure before the start of the World Cup. Suarez won the domestic title in a successful and fairytale return, but has stated he wants to once again move on from South American football, and has ruled out a European return.
The 35-year-old has been linked with MLS for some time, with Inter Miami and Los Angeles Galaxy tipped as his most likely suitors. And according to Gremio boss Alberto Guerra, Suarez has already made up his mind.
A tearful Suarez announced he would be leaving Nacional after they won the title, as he said: "I am satisfied to have taken the right step, to have enjoyed this moment, and I am happy to end it like this. [I feel] happiness and pride of having made the right decision."
And for a player of his calibre, offers haven't been in short supply, with an offer from Gremio in Brazil coming his way before the World Cup began. But Guerra revealed to Sport BILD, that Suarez turned down the offer as he has plans to head to the United States.
"We made a proposal that has already been rejected," Guerra said. "Suarez was grateful because it was a serious offer but his plan is to play in MLS. Our proposal was better than the MLS one, but he has this project."
Suarez previously revealed he had received offers from MLS clubs in the summer, but decided to head back to Uruguay for a short stint. But he may move to MLS after all, after claiming it is now his 'most likely' destination.
Back in October, Suarez was asked about his links to MLS, and whether he will move in the future. "I don't know yet," Suarez told Marca.
"It's one of the options that I see as being most likely, but I'm not thinking about that right now. I'm thinking about and enjoying myself at Nacional."
But his time at Nacional has now come to an end, and with MLS starting back up in February, Suarez could enjoy some recovery after the World Cup before moving to the United States for the 2023 season. The league continues to expand it's portfolio of great players, with Gareth Bale becoming the latest high-profile name to arrive.
Bale followed the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in joining MLS after establishing himself as a European legend, and even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are linked with moves to the States. Ronaldo is also a free agent, and it could become even more star-studded in the coming months.
