Luis Diaz signs, Conte ends up with weaker squad - Best and worst case Spurs transfer scenarios

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be one of the busiest teams in the Premier League in the final days of the transfer window but what will that look like?

Other than the departures of development squad players Jack Clarke and Dilan Markanday, Spurs are yet to conclude any first team signings or exits.

That is expected to change as the club's managing director of football Fabio Paratici, who is understood to be working on numerous deals ahead of Monday's deadline, decides with head coach Antonio Conte which moves to push the button on.

We've decided to take a look at the best and worst case scenarios, with a slight element of fun, for what could happen in Tottenham's transfer window in the remaining few days.

Worst case

Tottenham fans will feel they have already lived through a few worst case transfer window scenarios, particularly those barren windows ahead of their Champions League final season.

The worst case scenario however this month is not actually doing nothing - although that would certainly aggravate Conte no end. The worst thing Spurs could do in the remaining days would be to weaken their squad rather than strengthen it.

So in our worst case scenario, Tottenham are linked with exciting names galore but end up missing out on all of them.

They chase an exciting signing like Luis Diaz, get close to Porto's valuation, only to discover a deeply buried image rights clause in the final hours that derails the whole thing.

On top of that, Spurs have already allowed Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to go out on loan, completely removing any creative central midfield options from Conte's squad.

In the final hours, Paratici attempts to sound out 75 different midfielders from Serie A or those with links to super agent Jorge Mendes.

Gedson Fernandes is offered to Spurs in the final hours but instead chooses to complete his move to Galatasary rather than returning to north London.

The following day Conte releases a photo of his Hotspur Way office on his Instagram account with the simple caption: "Arrivederci."

Best case

In our best case scenario, Paratici's method of getting numerous deals to the verge of conclusion before deciding which ones to push through proves to be perfect for the frantic final days of the transfer window.

With Tottenham looking for a natural wing-back, Adama Traore takes his baby oil and heads off to Barcelona, while Paratici uses his relationship with the Spaniard's agent Mendes to help in the negotiations with Porto to sign Luis Diaz.

Spurs release a video on Sunday afternoon showing Davinson Sanchez on international duty hunting around the Colombian team hotel with a Go Pro camera on his head, before finding Diaz sitting at a table on his balcony with a big smile, wearing his new club's shirt.

In terms of outgoings, Tottenham get good deals for Alli, Lo Celso and Ndombele, all loans with obligations to buy the players in the summer.

With that guaranteed money coming in, Spurs, having already tied up the deal for Diaz, Paratici completes a loan deal for Genoa's versatile 21-year-old Andrea Cambiaso, who can play as a wing-back or full-back on either side of the pitch, with an option to buy the Italy U21 defender in the summer.

To free up the space in that department, Matt Doherty heads back to Wolves on a permanent deal as he seeks more regular football.

Continuing the Serie A theme, with the Ivory Coast now out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Egypt, Spurs find it easier to discuss a move with Franck Kessie and the 25-year-old decides that a switch from AC Milan to north London now is worth the lost money he would gain in waiting until the summer. The Italian club take the £15m rather than lose Kessie for nothing.

There's still one huge surprise to come on deadline day as, with the extra funds from the sales, Paratici makes a dramatic late swoop for one of Europe's most wanted men, Dusan Vlahovic, snatching him away from under the noses of Juventus.

Spurs agree a big fee with Fiorentina after Conte personally calls the 21-year-old Serbian to inform him of his plans to switch to a 4-4-2, which will see Vlahovic and Harry Kane play as a strike partnership with Son Heung-min and Diaz on either wing, forming a new and thrilling attacking quartet.

The deal is done at 10.59pm and the following morning Conte releases an Instagram image of himself beaming in his Hotspur Way office, with the simple caption: "Osare è fare."
