Former England international striker Gary Lineker has heaped praise on Luis Diaz after his latest fine display for Liverpool.
The Colombian forward scored the game-clinching third goal for the Reds against Benfica on Tuesday, as they won 3-1 in Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
First-half strikes from Ibrahima Konate and Sadio Mane put Liverpool in a commanding position at the interval and while a second-half finish from Darwin Nunez halved the deficit, the chasm in quality between the two teams was evident throughout.
Diaz made sure that quality gap was reflected in the scoreline in the 87th minute, latching on to Naby Keita's precise pass and rounding the hapless Benfica goalkeeper. Lineker took to social media to share his admiration of the goal and the player.
"Superb goal from Diaz should seal it for Liverpool," he posted. "What a signing."
Diaz's goal gives Liverpool some breathing room for the second leg at Anfield in what is a crucial month for the Reds. They head to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, knowing a win would put them on top of the table.
As a former Porto player, the goal would have been especially sweet for Diaz. He was jeered throughout the contest and a supporter appeared to aim a stick at him in the corner as he celebrated his goal.
