Luigi Mangione Allegedly Considered Using A Bomb To Kill CEO, According To Recovered Notebook

Luigi Mangione UnitedHealthcare CEO bomb

Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, possibly contemplated using a bomb for the murder

According to a law enforcement source speaking to CNN, Mangione had allegedly written notes about his plans in a spiral notebook which included a to-do list to orchestrate Thompson’s killing and notes justifying his actions.

In one section, Mangione allegedly revealed he had considered using a bomb for the murder but decided against it as it “could kill innocents”. Instead, a shooting would make it easier to target one potential victim.

Another law enforcement source told the New York Times the notebook contained these words: “What do you do? You wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents.”

Prosecutors in New York have filed multiple charges against the 26-year-old, who is accused of killing Thompson last week in New York outside the Hilton Hotel. He has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm.

Commissioner Jessica Tisch has claimed they have matched Mangione’s fingerprints with those on a Kind snack bar wrapper and water bottle left near the crime scene.

Police officials also said the gun found with Mangione when he was arrested in Pennsylvania has been looked at by the police crime lab. The lab confirmed it matches the three shell casings found at the crime scene.

Another law enforcement official said the police are also looking at a bag of bullets found in Central Park to see if there is any connection with Thompson’s killing.

Police have been looking into the theory that Mangione was motivated by back pain, with investigators believing he suffered from a back injury on July 4, 2023.

“Some of the writings that he had, he was discussing the difficulty of sustaining that injury,” New York Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told Fox News

“So we’re looking into whether or not the insurance industry either denied a claim from him, or didn’t help him out to the fullest extent.”

What has Luigi Mangione’s lawyer said about the case?

Mangione’s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, has given multiple statements about his client.

“We’re contesting it,” he said on Tuesday (local time). “I don’t want people to jump to these prejudgement things, because nobody would ever want that if they were accused or their loved ones were accused.”

When asked about law enforcement’s claim that the crime scene bullets match the gun found on Mangione, Dickey said he hadn’t seen the evidence yet.

We have to see the evidence — they can say what it is and all this other kind of stuff, but we have to see it,” the lawyer said. “When you’re talking about it getting admitted into a courtroom, the legal standard is different.”

Dickey also said he was “concerned” about his client having the “ability to get a fair trial”.

“I try to remind people of the presumption of innocence and how important it is and not to jump to conclusions,” the lawyer said.

Mangione is currently being held in Pennsylvania and it’s unknown when he will be extradited to New York.
