Ludhiana: Residents of south constituency protest over power, water supply

LUDHIANA: The residents living in various localities falling under south constituency are reeling under power and water crisis for a long time. On Sunday, people protested against Punjab government and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur China and demanded regular power and water supply in the areas. The residents said government had claimed to give 300 units free every month, but they have failed to provide normal power supply that has further affected water supply too in these areas.

The residents from at least 42 localities like Gill Colony, Gurmail Colony, Maha Maya Nagar, Sunder Nagar and Sukhdev Nagar were affected from poor power and water supply problem. These areas are covered in ward numbers 29, 30, 31 and 32. The residents protested outside MLA office since morning but MLA came there in the evening and heated arguments took place among them. However she assured the residents to find a solution to their problem.

A resident of Sunder Nagar Sandeep Shukla who was leading the protest said, “It has been more than three months time since when we are getting erratic power supply. At the time of water supply there is power cut.” He said they fail to fill their tanks and then for daily household chores too they have to depend upon private water tankers or get it filled from neighbours who have submersibles at home. He said from past three days situation had turned worst. “We are not satisfied with MLA reply so on Monday we will contact the CM,” he said.

However, another resident from Sukhdev Nagar, Sunita Tiwari said, “For the last three days, there is not a single drop of water at home and we do not have water to do daily jobs. There are children at home and on Saturday night we purchased water from market for cooking and drinking,”

Meanwhile, MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur China said, “There was an issue related to feeder in the area and electricity department is fixing it due to which the power supply was disturbed. The electricity will get normal shortly.” She said due to power cuts, the water supply was affected.
