Ludhiana: Police get 2-day custody of Bains’s brother in rape case

Ludhiana: A local court on Sunday gave Ludhiana police two days’ custody of Karamjit Singh Bains, brother of Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) chief and former MLA Simarjeet Bains, a day after he was arrested in a rape case.

Joint commissioner of police (rural) Ravcharan Singh Brar said during the remand period, they would question Karamjit about the case and collect material evidence. He said they were conducting raids to arrest the other accused.

Meanwhile, the complainant in the case said she would not lift her protest outside the commissioner of police’s office that she had started on February 8 last year till the accused were punished. “How long will he run?” she asked.

Balwinder Singh Bains, former MLA and elder brother of Simarjit Bains, said they have full faith in the judiciary and God and were hopeful of getting justice. He claimed that his brother was framed because of political vendetta.

The 44-year-old complainant had alleged that she was raped by Bains several times between April and October 2020 on the pretext of helping her in a property dispute. On July 10 last year, Division 6 police had registered an FIR against Bains, his brothers Karamjit Singh and Paramjit Singh Pamma and LIP workers Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur and Sukhchain Singh and PA Gopi Sharma under sections 376 (rape), 354 (sexual harassment), 354-B (sexual assault), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
