Lucky grandad bags £2,600 football accumulator win after betting just 3p

A lucky granddad bagged a £2,600 football accumulator win - after betting just 3p with his local bookmaker.

Janus Wagonback, 85, correctly predicted that ten games would finish in draws - at astonishing odds of 90,000-1.

Staff at his local Betfred let him bet just 3p - less than the usual 5p minimum - because he is a regular.

Janus, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, said the cash was “loose change that I had in my pocket”.

He was amazed to see all ten matches had finished in a stalemate when he checked his newspaper.

Janus, known in the bookies as George, just put on the loose change he found in his pocket (PA)

The games included league matches in England and Scotland and a World Cup qualifier between Lebanon and Iraq.

Janus, originally from Hungary, said: “I was confident the Scottish games would all be draws, as they often are up there.

“I didn’t know I’d won until I checked the paper the next day. I did feel good, but can’t jump around much these days - only little jumps.

“I’ve had some significant wins on the football over the years, much bigger than this one.

But if he wasn't a regular he wouldn't have been allowed to bet such a tiny amount (PA)

“But then again, I usually bet more than 3p, which is basically loose change that I had in my pocket.”

The 10-fold accumulator last week saw Janus, who is a former bodybuilder and talented chess player, win £2,686.04.

The matches were Millwall-Preston, Wimbledon-Cheltenham, Bradford-Leyton Orient, Colchester-Rochdale, Swindon-Crawley, Dundee-Dundee United,

Hibernian-Hearts, Ross County-Aberdeen, St Mirren-Motherwell and Lebanon-Iraq.

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “I’ve been in this business for over 50 years and cannot remember anyone winning so much from just three pence.

“It is a truly remarkable win, with him beating odds of virtually 90,000/1.”
