One Cheltenham Festival punter was celebrating after pocketing more than €46,000 from a bet that cost just over €1.
The unnamed English backer placed a speculative 50p each-way seven-fold accumulator with betting firm William Hill on Wednesday.
The winning punter picked a horse in every race on day two of the Festival, including Bronn at 50/1, Lieutenant Rocco at 100/1 and Captain Teague at 33/1, all of whom placed.
Only one of their selections actually won, Impaire Et Passe at 5/2, but thanks to monster-priced horses running into places in the remaining races, they pocketed huge returns of £40,929.31 (€46,530).
Without William Hill’s Extra Places offering, Captain Conby (6th at 15/2), and Lieutenant Rocco (4th at 100/1) would have been settled as losers and the punter wouldn’t have received a single penny.
William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps, said: “You’ve got to take your hat off to one of our customers who scooped over £40k at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday thanks in no small part to our extra places offers.
“The punter’s selections included Bronn at 50/1, Lieutenant Rocco at 100/1 and Captain Teague at 33/1, who all placed, and they were left celebrating a win of £40,929.31. We’ll be keeping an eye whatever they’re backing for the rest of the Festival!”
