Luciano Spalletti challenged Rangers delay as frustrated Napoli boss has Champions League request 'rejected'

A 24-hour delay to their Ibrox clash with Rangers has reportedly been met with a counter-request by Napoli.

The midweek Champions League group stage fixture has been pushed back from Tuesday to Wednesday following an announcement from UEFA on Sunday. European football's governing body confirmed the decision was taken "due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II".

Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti will take his side to Glasgow for an 8pm kick-off as they bid to make it two wins from two after a sensational 4-1 drubbing of last season's finalists Liverpool. However, Italian outlet Il Mattino report Spalletti has been irked by the change and that the Serie A side requested a 5.45pm kick-off for the newly arranged Wednesday night date. But it's said this request was turned down by UEFA amid the aforementioned pressure on police resources.

The report also states Spalletti made selection decisions for Saturday's late league win over Spezia that he otherwise wouldn't have had the manager known the Rangers fixture was going to be delayed. The unbeaten Serie A leaders left it late as an 89th minute Giacamo Raspadori strike eventually secured Napoli a precious three points. They sit top of the Italian top flight after six fixtures, with Atalanta second and Milan third.
