Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA), an immigrants’ rights group, has been actively engaging in the current election by knocking on over 600,000 doors to promote civic engagement. The organization, which also advocates for social and economic justice, has a presence in six counties across urban and suburban areas in Arizona.
Despite Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning for a border enforcement bill that LUCHA does not support, organizer Alejandra Gomez remains hopeful about Harris's stance on comprehensive immigration reform. Gomez appreciates Harris's recent discussions on this topic during a visit to the border, emphasizing the importance of organizing with Harris to address critical issues.
Gomez highlighted the potential impact of mass deportations on approximately half a million mixed-status families if President Donald Trump is reelected. During their door-to-door outreach, community members expressed concerns about deportation and family separation, reflecting the anxieties prevalent among immigrant communities.
Gomez underscored the significant contributions of immigrant communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing them as the backbone of society. She emphasized the valuable role these communities play in enriching the cultural fabric of the nation.
