Low Sofas Are So Back – Jim Carrey’s ’90s Living Room Celebrates an Overlooked Trend (Forgotten Until 2026)

Jim Carrey.

Furniture design has greatly evolved since the 90s, but some interior staples have stood the test of time, including low sofas. While the popularity of this style has ebbed and flowed in recent years, experts say it's back for 2026, and Jim Carrey’s living room reminds us why.

Archival photos from the actor's home in 1991 showcase a low sofa in the family living room, alongside a series of '90s design trends (a brick fireplace and an intricate wood side table) that I'm similarly coveting.

In the years since this shoot, low living room sofas seemed to fall slightly out of fashion, with plush, sculptural pieces taking center stage. For 2026, however, this look is back, and experts say every kind of home can benefit from this overlooked seating hero. To make it easier to get involved, I've rounded up some of my favorites, including this one from CB2, which is similar to the one seen in Jim's space.

According to experts, the low-sofa trend reflects a shift toward spaces that prioritize laid-back style and relaxed comfort, and it's only going to grow stronger as the year progresses.

'Low-slung furniture brings a grounded, calming aesthetic that aligns with increased focus on wellness and mindfulness,' comments Sebastian Clarke, the senior designer at King Living.

'The low profile opens up spaces, creating a sense of flow and connection, which is ideal for compact or multi-functional rooms. Often crafted with wider, more generous seats, these pieces invite you to sink in and unwind.'

Plus, as Sebastian explains, their somewhat discreet profile is versatile enough to work in any kind of living room, no matter your current design aesthetic. 'Low-slung sofas offer sleek, minimalist style that works in both modern and traditional spaces. They’re perfect for open-plan layouts, dividing areas without disrupting flow,' he says.

'Choosing low-slung furniture helps create a relaxed, welcoming space to retreat to, which is essential after busy days in our modern, fast-paced lifestyles. As we continue to seek versatile and mindful designs, low-slung furniture is set to remain a staple design trend for years to come. '

Just like Jim's iconic living room in the ’90s, the low-slung sofa is proving that grounded, comfortable design never really goes out of style – 2026 is just its latest encore.
