Fewer than a dozen developers can now lodge multi-unit plans under new licence rules

Fewer than a dozen companies are licensed to develop multi-unit residential sites in Canberra under a new scheme the ACT government says will target "dodgy" developers, prompting renewed industry concern the regime is putting new projects at risk.

The government said it was carefully monitoring the licensing scheme after it started on October 1 with just 11 licensed developers listed on the public register a year after the scheme opened for licence applications.

"Having 11 property developers currently licensed is consistent with the expected number of [development applications] for projects now requiring a licence," a government spokesman said.
