Love Island viewers in disbelief over Edinburgh Hearts v Ayr United reference

Love Island is tip-toeing towards the finish line, with the finale airing on Monday, August 1 - so our islanders decided to show off their skills in the annual talent show.

However, an Edinburgh football team ended up with a mention in the show - shocking viewers from the capital who were tuning in to see some rapping and recorder playing.

Fans were in disbelief as they watched Tuesday night's episode of the ITV2 dating programme, as Scottish comedian and narrator Iain Stirling made a reference to a certain Championship fixture.

Iain said: "The curtains just fallen on the Love Island talent show 2022. Without doubt, the least amount of talent I've seen on display since I watched Ayr United playing away to Hearts."

This was in reference to the 2020/21 season where Hearts were relegated to the Championship, and had to play against the likes of Ayr United at Tynecastle. Thankfully, the Jam Tarts won both games 2-0 and 1-0, and were promoted within a season.

Viewers took to social media to discuss this obscure reference on Love Island. One Twitter user wrote: "@IainDoesJokes with a wee dig at hearts on #LoveIsland tonight!"

Another said: "No f****** way did Ayr United v Hearts get mentioned on love island."

And a third wrote: "@IainDoesJokes @LoveIsland Why you trashing Ayr United in your show opener tonight? I get the Hearts bit but Ayr?! Hearts have played worse teams than us surely!!"

More comments read: "didn't expect iain to mention ayr united and hearts on love island."

And others said: "Haha...@JamTarts getting a mention on @LoveIsland tonight!"

Finally, one concluded: "Why have hearts just been mentioned on love island!"

Maybe Hibernian's league cup antics will be the next to get mentioned on the popular ITV2 show, who knows?

Love Island resumes on Wednesday, July 27 at 9pm on ITV2. Episodes are available for catch up on the ITV Hub.
