Love Island star Amber's family deactivate Twitter account as she's targeted by trolls

Love Island star Amber Beckford has had her Twitter account deactivated by her family and friends due to "vile" trolls.

The 24-year-old — who left the villa alongside Ikenna Ekwonna on Tuesday's episode — had received extensive online harassment during her time on the show.

Amber's family has now released a statement explaining their decision to remove her from the social media site.

Taking to Amber's Instagram Story, they wrote: "Hey all, Amber's time in the villa has come to an end. We have received some lovely comments & messages and thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"However as most of you are probably aware of some of the vile tweets, messages and posts that are being written about Amber. As Amber's family and friends this has been extremely hard to see and sometimes sickening," they added.

The statement continued: "We didn’t want to have to post something like this, but please remember that bullying somebody over an hour episode of a televised show is damaging.

"Bullying and negative comments can be extremely harmful to someone’s mental health and sometimes in worse cases can be fatal."

Amber's family and friends added they "will not stand for bullying and harassment".

They said: "For this reason, we have unfortunately decided to deactivate Amber’s twitter before her arrival home to protect her mental well-being.

"This is a decision that has been made by Amber’s close friends and family as it has been extremely difficult for her family and friends to see, and we still want to make this an exciting time for Amber; not a negative one."

Amber's family went on to thank those who had shown the London nanny love and supported her on her journey.

They finished the statement by saying: "We wish Amber's new friends the best of luck in the Villa and will continue to support them, please remember to be kind to them also; were only human.

"If you have nothing nice to say, keep it to yourself."

Amber later returned to Instagram to post a bikini picture of herself (@amberbeckford/Instagram)

Back in 2021, ITV bosses adopted strict duty of care protocols ahead of series seven of the dating show after several stars battled mental health issues.

Past contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, as well as previous host Caroline Flack sadly took their own lives.

Aftercare includes contestants getting bespoke training on dealing with social media, advice on finance and adjusting to life back home.

Islanders will also be offered a minimum of eight therapy sessions after their time on the show and remain in contact with ITV for 14 months after the series with additional provided where applicable.

Love Island is on ITV2 at 9pm.
