Love Island winner Amber Gill risks being reported to Trading Standards and having her social media shut down for flouting advertising rules.
The star, 24, has been repeatedly warned by the Advertising Standards Authority for failing to flag up to her 2.5 million followers on Instagram when she is being paid to promote products.
She was this week placed on a “watch-list” by the ASA alongside fellow Love Island stars Francesca Allen, Jess Gale, Eve Gale and Belle Hassan, who were already on the list.
It said of Amber: “We will continue to monitor her content and, if she fails to follow the rules in future, she could also be subject to further sanctions.”
Further sanctions could mean the ASA taking ads out against her on Instagram, alerting consumers to her failure to follow the rules.
If this fails, the ASA could go to Trading Standards as well as ask social media companies to delete content or even shut down her account.
The watchdog said: “The ASA is considering further sanctions if needed.
“This includes working with social media platforms to have content removed or refer influencers to statutory bodies such as Trading Standards for consideration of statutory action including possible fines.”
It did not provide examples of content Amber flouted the rules by posting but her Instagram has recently been used to promote hairdryers, make-up and streaming services.
Recent posts have flagged content as “ads”, which is in keeping with rules.
Amber won ITV reality show Love Island in 2019 and landed a gig as a Loose Woman panellist soon after.
It is not the first controversy she has been involved in.
She was recently under fire for going to Dubai as Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions came into force. Going abroad was permitted for work reasons if your job cannot be done at home.
Many influencers were bombarded with abuse and even death threats after posting sun-drenched pictures online.
Amber later wrote to her Instagram followers: “I just want to put it out there I had no idea Tier 4 was a thing.
“The flight here was booked way before. I thought the only changes were being made on [the] 16th, meaning I was still allowed to travel for work.”
Amber added that she has “no idea” what to do next, because she was only due to spend four days in the country.
She said: “Now I don’t know where I’m supposed to go or if I should stay here. It’s all mad.”
Other stars who went to either Dubai or the Maldives at the time included Amber Davies, Molly-Mae Hague, Tommy Fury and Laura Anderson.
