Love Island's most controversial early exits ever - Brutal dumpings to walk outs

Love Island returned to our screens last night with its brand new series, with ITV2 viewers watching as a host of new islanders made their way into the iconic villa setting.

They will be hoping for a summer of romance, though there's likely to be some drama along the way - especially once recouplings begin and other people join the group.

And whilst the latest islanders settle down in their new home, we thought we'd take a look back at some former contestants whose experiences perhaps didn't go to plan.

There have been a few islanders who ended up leaving the villa unexpectedly, whether it be due to a surprise dumping or because they felt the call of home days into their villa arrival.

Sherif Lanre (Series 5)

Sherif Lanre left the villa after eight days in 2019, after " breaking the villa rules." He was said to have spoken with producers and they "mutually agreed" that he should leave.

He later stated that he had accidentally "kick[ed] Molly-Mae [Hague] in the groin area" and joked that it had been a "c*** punt." He however came to regret such behaviour.

Sherif said after his departure: "I realise now that was wrong and I would like to apologise." Shortly after his exit, he had described his actions as "a case of poor judgement".

Ollie Williams (Series 6)

Ollie Williams, now 26, voluntarily left the villa after three days on the show in 2020. He explained that he had decided to quit the show as he was still in love with his ex.

His departure however came amid photos emerging of Ollie posing alongside, what appeared to be, dead animals. There was speculation the backlash to them led to his exit.

He however responded following his departure, saying he "had no knowledge" of the stories whilst in the villa and asserting that he had never shot animals as a trophy hunter.

Shannon Singh (Series 7)

Shannon Singh infamously only lasted two days on Love Island last year, with her departure having been dubbed ' the most brutal dumping ' following her exit from the villa.

Her departure came after late arrival Chloe Burrows opted to couple up with Aaron Francis at the recoupling, which left Shannon single and the earliest dumped islander ever.

Some fans had hoped that she would return to the show later in the series, with there speculation she would be part of Casa Amor. This however wasn't the case.

Niall Aslam (Series 4)

While Niall Aslam wasn't the first to leave his series - he was the earliest Love Island contestant to walk on their own terms.

Harry Potter fan Niall decided to leave the villa after just nine days in the summer of 2018, with his premature departure from the show initially cited as being due to "personal reasons."

He later revealed on social media that he has Asperger's Syndrome - with it understood that the condition was related to his departure from the villa in Majorca.

The form of autism can make it challenging to cope with change and interactions, with Niall saying in 2021 that he suffered with his mental health whilst on the ITV show

Love Island continues tonight on ITV2 and ITV Hub from 9pm.
