Love Island viewers found out exactly why Jacques O'Neill decided to quit the ITV2 series during Tuesday night's episode.
The latest instalment of the reality show saw tensions reach boiling point after Gemma Owen told Jacques that Adam Collard had been 'sla*ging' him off.
Jacques was far from calm as he stormed over to Paige Thorne and demanded to know what Adam had said about him.
As Billy Brown tried to help, Jacques told him to "f*ck off" as he continued probing Paige.
What followed was a tense chat with Adam, but at the end of the evening, Jacques was the one climbing into bed with Paige.
However, it was clear to see that he was restless and had a lot on his mind.
The following morning, Jacques confided in Luca and said: "I've never been massively upset over a girl or a bit like hurt. So in life I'd rather get away from things before I get hurt."
A while later, he took Paige up to the terrace and broke down in tears as he revealed he was leaving the villa and heading home.
Jacques explained that as much as he liked Paige, he felt like he couldn't be the best version of himself whilst living in the Spanish villa.
"You mean so much to me, you know that. I've been trying to put a brave face on but things are getting to me," he told Paige as he fought back tears.
Basically, like, I just wish I could finish my journey off with you in here, but I'm gonna go home today," he continued as Paige burst into tears too.
"I still want you to enjoy your time in here, just do what you need to do and listen, I'll be waiting for you," Jacques then said, before adding: "Just do what you have to do, don't even think about me."
With her voice wobbling, Paige told him: "Obviously I want you to be happy and it hurts me seeing you this way."
"I just know for us to work I need to get back to myself and the only way I'm gonna get back to myself is going home, so that's what I'm gonna do coz I can't carry on like this," Jacques then admitted.
"I just feel so guilty, like guilty for not coming with you and not leaving as well," Paige said as she wiped away tears.
The pair then shared another hug before heading downstairs to ask the rest of the group to gather by the fire pit.
Speaking to everyone, Jacques said: "So I feel like lately, I just can't be myself so I'm trying my best but I'm not a fake person and I'm not gonna start faking things and act like I'm, okay when things inside are not okay, so I'm gonna be leaving today."
The group were heard gasping as Jacques continued: "I just can't stick around and not be myself, it's not fair to me and it's not fair to Paige.
"For me and Paige to work I need to be at my best and if that means removing myself from the situation and waiting for Paige when she gets out, that's what I'm gonna do, so I'm gonna be leaving now," Jacques added.
Earlier on he said in the Beach Hut: "It's not the end of me and Paige because everyone knows how much she means to me. The only thing keeping me in here was Paige, I hope we can carry things on on the outside. Everyone knows how much she means to me."
Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
