Love Island's Gemma Owen's name mix-up leaves viewers with 'third-hand embarrassment'

Gemma Owen received a shock when her ex-boyfriend Jacques O'Neil was thrown into the mix and his presence has already caused some tension in the villa.

In tonight's episode, Gemma made an "interesting" slip of the tongue after she accidentally referred to Luca by her ex's (Jacques) name - right in front of him. Amber initially tries to laugh it off by saying, "Did you just call him something else?"

But Luca heard the mix-up and was rather blunt when he responded. He said: "I know what she said."

"Jacques?" Amber asked. Dami then joined the conversation, saying, "Oh my god, there is no way that happened, there is no way that happened!"

Having just coupled up with Jacques, Paige seemed to initially want to brush the comment away by telling her it was an "easy mistake to make, hun."

Luca then left the kitchen. His exit gave Gemma the chance to ask the other islanders: "That was bad wasn't it?" Paige replied: "That was bad, I am not gonna lie, he was stood there, you had your guy rubbing your shoulders, he's stood there and you're like… 'Oh Jacques.'"

The two seemingly made up later, but will the tensions of being around Gemma's Ex ultimately prove too much for Luca?

Views from social media

Twitter users did not hold back from commenting on the encounter. As soon as it happened, @astoldbyjesschi tweeted: “The third-hand embarrassment I just got #LoveIsland."

@alexr_241 reacted straight away, tweeting: "Gemma calling Luca Jacques I am SCREAMING”. @vicambrose_ added: “Gemma calling Luca Jacques by mistake???? The season has BEGUN #loveisland.”

Some Twitter users felt for Luca, with @Fv__786 tweeting, “she called him her ex's name that’s outrageous" and @TuIaTribe_ stating, “'I know what you said' Luca getting hit from every angle.”

However, not everyone took the same view, with @katelatemate11 thought it was an honest mistake. She said: “Tbf I always call people the wrong name, it’s not that deep Luca.”

Tonight's episode saw plenty of controversy and romance, with Tasha and Andrew becoming the first couple to visit the Hideaway, the boys' "Men-chanics" challenge, and two new additions to the Villa - Remi and Jay.

Love Island airs tonight at 9 pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
