Love Island's Alex George shares powerful 'I hate myself sometimes' message with fans

Former Love Island star Dr Alex George has opened up to his followers about the "most powerful thing" he has learnt in life so far. He said "you are not your thoughts" as he encouraged his fans to accept their flaws and appreciate their strengths.

Posting a lengthy message to Instagram, the former A&E doctor from Carmarthenshire posted a series of blank tiles with text on it alongside a caption which said: "You are not your thoughts. I'm pretty sure we all have felt self-loathing at times, our thoughts telling us that we are a bad person and just generally bad at everything. Once you learn to separate that *noise* from who you are, you begin to grow a true sense of confidence in who you are, accepting of all your flaws and recognising and appreciating your strengths."

His message, spread across four slides, read: "I hate myself sometimes. Do you? Pretty much everyone feels like that at times, so unless everyone in the world is a horrible person, something else is at play. The most powerful thing I have learnt in my life so far is that, *you are not your thoughts*. Wait, what? Yes, that's right. Your thoughts are just a fiction of your imagination. Quite literally."

He went on to deconstruct why we, as a people, have a pre-disposition to overthink and subsequently "hate myself". He said: "Why do your thoughts have more weight than the opinions of real people with real experience of you as a person? Your thoughts often come from a negatively biased, self-destructive place, with little or no consideration to the contrary."

Giving his own negative thought a name, he added: "Next time *John* (as I like to call him) comes at you with his BS, do not accept this *opinion* as fact. Your judgement of your own self-worth should come from a balanced view of facts and evidence, with a heavy dose of self-compassion."

This message was met with an abundance of support from fans which applauded and echoed this sentiment, with many sharing their own experiences. One Instagam user said: "yes 100 times yes", while another wrote: "I love this so much."

This post comes several months after the mental health ambassador opened up about his sobriety and why he decided to stop consuming alcohol for the forseeable future. Read more on that here.
