Love Island responds to viral tweet claiming Islander stole a woman's handbag

Love Island bosses have hilariously responded to the strange claim one of the new Islanders was involved in a robbery earlier this year.

Former winner Amber Gill also waded into the trending topic on Twitter, jokingly calling for the accuser to enter the iconic villa at one point this summer.

The whole internet saga began back on Monday, when the line-up for this year's ITV2 series was unveiled ahead of the show kicking off on next week - with real estate agent Andrew Le Page confirmed as one of the 11 love-seeking singletons ready for a long, hot summer.

As social media reacted this year's batch of Islanders, Twitter user Carol McGee thought she recognised one of the future influencers.

"He looks like the man who stole my daughter's handbag in Sainsbury's," Carol bluntly stated underneath a snap of new Islander Andrew shared on Twitter.

Becoming more explicit with her implied accusation, Carol demanded some answers from Love Island bosses.

"Can you confirm if he was in Bristol Sainsbury's on March 12th love island," she quizzed the show via their official Twitter account.

While Love Island bosses didn't get back to Carol straight away, one helpful fan stepped in to help out and clear Andrew's name.

"Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Carol but Andrew was in Dubai on March 12, so it seems your perpetrator is still at large," they told Carol via the micro-blogging platform on Monday.

Seemingly not 100% convinced by Andrew's innocence, Carol replied with: "Ok thanks [thumbs up] are you sure."

The whole interaction captured Twitter's attention, with former winner and author Amber getting in on some of the joke.

Quote-tweeting the conversation to her followers, the reality TV star declared: "Get Carol on the show! NOW! First challenge, Did you steal my daughters handbag?"

The Love Island graduate's suggestion was spotted by the show's official Twitter account, with them sassily replying: "speak to challenge team."

Away from being accused of stealing handbags in Bristol, Andrew lives a lavish life as an estate agent in Dubai.

Speaking ahead of the show premiering on Monday, the new Islander admitted he applied to go on the iconic show as he's "actually single for once, so I thought why not? This is the best time to give it a go".

He continued: "I was in a relationship, I moved to Dubai and she stayed in Guernsey but fair play to her, she’s doing her own thing which is really good.

"It just wasn’t going to work so we decided to go our separate ways. We ended on good terms, which is good."

Following accusing Andrew of looking like her daughter's robber, Carol is yet to respond to Amber or Love Island's tweets regarding the matter, but has been busy on Twitter.

Since the iconic mix-up, Carol has been tweeting ITV2 asking them to bring Supermarket Sweep with Rylan back to our screens and expressing her struggle to buy a particular greetings card in Card Factory.

* Love Island starts at 9pm next Monday (June 6) on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
