Love Island fans 'work out' why Gemma Owen is getting less air time

Love Island fans have noticed Gemma Owen is getting less time on screen lately.

Michael Owen's daughter, 19, seemed to get plenty of air time from the day the new series began. Many people commented on this, with Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid even referring to the programme "Gemma Island".

However, recent episodes have shown less of the dressage champion.

Of course, things do change in Love Island, and Gemma has certainly shown that. She had an initial partnering with Liam Llewellyn, but her subsequent recoupling with Davide caused a big stir - not least because of the eight-year age gap between Gemma and the "Italian stallion".

The reality show is not quite as free and easy as it appears on the surface. Producers carefully monitor the couples and stories that do well on the show.

Of course, nothing draws in attention from viewers quite like drama. At the start of the series, Gemma certainly had no shortage of that, switching partners three times in quick succession, Cheshire Live reports.

Now, however, Gemma appears to be going steady with Luca. And that lack of conflict could be one reason she has not been getting quite so much air time lately.

Taking to Twitter, Jennifer said: "We were complaining about it being Gemma Island and now she's not getting any screen time", while Christina said: "We’ve been so concerned with Gemma taking up air time, but the producers are really positioning Tasha to win. #LoveIsland". Raven said: "The best thing about Luca and Gemma's relationship is that it's solid so takeaway they won’t get screen time".

Love Island bosses may also have decided to take the teenager out of the firing line after she received a barrage of hatred on social media in the first week of the show. Gemma was greeted by mixed feelings from viewers, and received a heavy backlash online.

And the drama surrounding Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu - who left Davide in favour of Scottish hunk Jay Younger, then embarked on a heated row with Amber Beckford - has taken up a fair bit of air time. The couple secretly shared a kiss on the terrace - then she lied about where she had been.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and the ITV Hub
