A trial for a Louisiana man accused of randomly stabbing a U.S. Postal worker during her shift on New Year's Eve only took four days, and ended in an unanimous verdict, according to the Department of Justice.

On December 31, 2021, Lionel Haile approached the woman delivering mail in a Zachary, Louisiana apartment building under the pretense of offering her a bottle of water. The incident escalated as Haile took out a what appeared to be a knife, resulting in a brutal assault captured on surveillance footage.

The postal worker fought Haile's attempts to stab her upper-torso area and legs, but still sustained injuries to the right leg. The woman was able to fend off further attempts on her life by running toward a passing vehicle and escaping the complex.

Haile fled the scene, but was found after a week-long search. On January 6, 2022, he was arrested by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

According to the DOJ, the jury unanimously decided to convict Haile after a four-day trial. As a result, he now faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
