A Dublin woman says her life has “completely changed” for the better after losing half of her total body weight.
Charity manager Carla Piera cut down her weight from 23 stone to just 10 stone after joining Irish weight loss programme Body Slims. She had previously struggled with binge eating and bulimia in earlier years and decided in 2019 to seek professional support for disordered eating.
She says that the weight loss has also had a positive on her mental wellbeing as well as her physical health. She welcomed her son into the world back in January and believes she would not have conceived without the lifestyle change.

Carla said: “ I tested my egg reserves at the start of my weight loss journey and the results were very poor, but I believe becoming so healthy really helped to change this for me. The hardest part of my journey was the work on my mental health, the weight loss was simple but not easy. I just did what I needed to do consistently until I lost the weight and I did.”
She adds that people often react differently when they encounter her post weight loss. She says that acquaintances often look her and up down when she is out in public.
She adds: “I think most people are surprised that I weigh 23st prior to losing weight and they're even more shocked that I managed to lose 13st.
“I think people sometimes don't even know what to say, and because I lost most of my weight in lockdown, they're stunned when they see me, even if they've seen photos it can be quite shocking in real life.”
However, this doesn’t deter Carla from making the most out of her new found confidence. The 34-year-old has made great strides in supporting her mental health and goes on a daily walk to keep up the momentum.
The weight loss itself has made small but important changes to her daily life. She finds shopping for clothing less stressful and no longer experiences anxiety when travelling on crowded buses or planes.
She successfully lost the weight through Body Slim’s programme, which involved a reduction on her calorie intake and a concentrated exercise regime.
