A 29-year-old suspect is in custody after the official residence of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was broken into on Sunday morning while she was home, according to police and her spokesperson. The incident occurred at around 6:40 a.m. when a person smashed a window to gain entry into the Getty House, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Mayor Bass was inside the residence at the time of the break-in, but fortunately, no one in the family was harmed. The nondescript Tudor-style home, located in the Windsor Square neighborhood, was targeted by the suspect. The motive behind the break-in is still under investigation, with detectives looking into whether the mayor was specifically targeted.
The suspect was arrested by the LAPD, and the booking process continued into Sunday evening. Officers are also seeking search warrants for the suspect's digital devices as part of the ongoing investigation. Both the spokesperson for the mayor and the police have not disclosed further details about the incident.
This is not the first time Mayor Bass has experienced a home break-in. In September 2022, while she was serving in the US House of Representatives and running for mayor, a different residence she was living in was burglarized, resulting in the theft of two firearms. Two men later pleaded no contest to burglary and grand theft charges in that case.
Mayor Bass and her family are reported to be safe, and she expressed gratitude to the LAPD for their swift response in apprehending the suspect. The investigation into the recent break-in at the official residence of the Los Angeles Mayor continues as law enforcement works to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
