Lorraine's Ross King red-faced as he apologises for accidentally saying Tony Bennett is dead

Lorraine correspondent Ross King was left red-faced today after accidentally saying that jazz legend Tony Bennett was dead.

The Hollywood correspondent, 60, was speaking about Lady Gaga's role in a new Joker film when he mentioned the singer.

Host Ranvir Singh, who is filling in for Lorraine Kelly over the summer, brought up the news that Lady Gaga would be back on screen.

"This is the news that we've all been waiting for," he said. "Here is the good news - Gaga is going to be in the next Joker movie. Of course, coming back will be the Joker himself - Joaquin Phoenix - that was 2019. That was when he won the Oscar for that as well. It was the first R rated movie to make $1billion worldwide.

"So this one is called Folie A Deux - translated that means 'folly of two' and it refers to a mental illness that is shared by two people in close association. So, of course now fans are thinking 'A ha! Does this mean that Gaga will take on the role of the Joker's girlfriend Harley Quinn?' Not confirmed yet but it could possibly be.

"Also, we hear that this one is going to be a musical as well. A teaser has just been dropped - here's Gaga, here's the music, here's cheek to cheek and here's - of course - the song that we associate with her and the wonderful and the absolutely brilliant late Tony Bennett."

A clip then aired of the song and a simple teaser - but later Ross realised his mistake after calling Tony Bennett "the late" as he is still alive.

He interjected after speaking about Harry Styles helping a fan propose, looking flustered: "Can I just also clarify as well - I did say 'the late Tony Bennett' - Tony has not yet passed away, sorry about that.

"He is still around and is still one of the greats so apologies for people thinking that something had happened there!"

*Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
