Lorraine host Christine Lampard left upset by traumatic Call The Midwife scenes

Christine Lampard was left 'upset and emotional' after watching last Sunday's Call The Midwife, sharing her concern for characters with star of the show Georgie Glen on Lorraine.

Millions of BBC viewers were left fearing the worst at the end of the penultimate episode of the hit drama's new series when much loved characters Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner were involved in a terrifying train crash.

As they travelled back to Poplar, the driver in control of the train suffered a medical emergency, leading to it hurtling down the trains and colliding with another service.

Both Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner's lives hung in the balance as they credits rolled on Sunday's show, with viewers flocking to Twitter in a state of shock to share their concerns and try to make sense of what they'd just watched.

Among the fans who tuned in was well known presenter Christine, who has been covering for Lorraine Kelly all week on her ITV morning show.

On Friday's programme, Christine was joined by Georgie, who plays Miss Higgins in Call The Midwife.

Before Christine interviewed Georgie, a teaser for Sunday's dramatic series finale played out on screen, showing Doctor Turner's son being told that he was trapped on board the train.

As cameras cut back to the studio, Christine said: "Oh! Georgie Glen, who plays Miss Higgins, joins me now.

"Oh gosh Georgie! What a cliffhanger. A very emotional and upsetting cliffhanger."

Georgie replied: "To be honest, when I saw the episode myself, I was shocked...and I knew it was coming.

"So I think the way it just evolved and happened at the end of the episode was shocking. You didn't see it was about to happen."

A TV guide preview for Sunday's Call The Midwife has done little to assure viewers. Published online earlier this week, it read: "The team rushes to the aid of the injured in the wake of a terrible tragedy that has devastated the Poplar community - but there is no news of whether Sister Julienne or Dr Turner have survived."

It added: "A guilt-stricken Timothy goes in search of his father, while an oblivious Sister Higgins learns what of the catastrophic events occurring nearby while she is in the middle of a delivery."
