Loris Karius is relishing a fresh start after his Liverpool nightmare - and has been keeping himself in top condition in preparation for a comeback. Newcastle United are poised to sign the 29-year-old stopper as an emergency replacement for Karl Darlow after he suffered an ankle injury in training.
Darlow's problem may keep him out of action until early 2023, Chronicle Live understands. Nick Pope and Mark Gillespie are the only other senior goalkeepers at the club, while Martin Dubravka was recently loaned to Manchester United.
Karius fell out of favour on Merseyside after his infamous performance in the 2018 Champions League final. However, he insists that nightmare is behind him and he has been putting the work in to stay in shape ahead of his return to club football.

Speaking in June, Karius told Sky Sports Germany: "I took a week's holiday after the season. That was enough for me. Now the focus is on the restart. There's a new challenge coming up.
"I'm ready for it and I'm getting fit now. That's my focus right now. I'm in top shape. I've been training at the highest level all year, with one of the best teams in the world.
"I've done a lot for myself physically. I've worked a lot on my personality and strengthened myself mentally, that's why I'm I'm excited about what's to come. I'm free and I can make my own decisions.
"This is a new situation that I'm looking forward to. A new challenge is coming up, but that's always a good thing. I'm ready, mentally and physically."
