Loose Women stars say Will Smith's Oscars win 'tarnished forever' after Chris Rock slap

Loose Women's Ruth Langsford and Kelle Bryan said it was "a shame" that Will Smith's "deserved" Oscars 2022 win had been "tainted" by events involving Chris Rock.

Ruth, Kelle and their co-stars agreed the win was a "long time coming" as they praised the star, while discussing his reaction to comedian Chris' comment.

The controversial moment went viral, despite some suspicions it might have been staged, following a joke made about Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

While Will seemed to initially laugh at Chris' GI Jane comment, while Jada watched on furiously, he soon raced up onto the stage and slapped Chris.

The comment appeared to reference Jada's shaved head, with the actress recently opening up on her alopecia battle - while Will was heard shouting out: "K eep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth."

The Loose ladies shared their thoughts on the moment on the show on Monday, with them quick to praise Will for his long-awaited award win.

But as they all admitted they could not condone violence, they slammed Chris Rock for his joke claiming it was "in bad taste" - while they added it was unfortunate that Will Smith's big moment would be overshadowed by the incident.

Panellist Katie Piper said: "I find it quite shocking to watch it and first of all, I want to say that displays of violence never translate to how much you love somebody, and I think that is a very dangerous area to say, 'I'm jealous and I hit someone for you because I love you,' or 'I hit you because I love you,' and I think it is a really bad example to set to anybody.

"Equally the joke was of terrible taste because Jada lives with alopecia, it is a disease, she cannot change her appearance. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

"Will could have spent years and years helping her feel ready to step out to events like that looking visibly different, and one of the biggest reassurances from a partner is that nobody is staring, you look okay, it's fine. Nobody is going to make fun of you, and that is exactly what Chris Rock did.

"There is no place for that kind of joke in 2022."

Kelle also had her say, adding: "Up until today Will Smith has had a flawless card, a flawless reputation, and he said himself he feels like he is carrying this weight of being responsible, of being upright and forthright, doing all the right things at the right time.

"This is such a great shame that his one moment he's waited his entire career for, to actually win the award, some say he should have got it for Pursuit of Happiness, some say he should have got it for Ali, and this was his moment. Now it's been tarnished by this incident."

As Ruth added: "Forever..." Kelle said: "It will be historical forever and that's a really great shame."

Ruth mentioned that Will should still be praised for his success with the win (ITV)

As Coleen Nolan backed that no one could sit on the panel and condone the violence, Ruth mentioned that Will should still be praised for his success with the win.

She explained: "We've still got to say congratulations to him on that Oscar, his first one in a very, very long career. It's such a shame it's been tainted as it has, and I'm sure it won't be the last we hear about that."

Kelle said it was a "long time coming" as Coleen added: "Well deserved."

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
