Astronaut Sophie Adenot made history this month as the first French woman to perform a spacewalk. Back on Earth, space enthusiasts across France are finding their own ways to reach for the stars. In the fourth of a five-part series, RFI meets amateur sailors learning to navigate by the stars, using a technique that allows them to find their position without GPS or onboard electronics.

We set sail from Belle-Île-en-Mer, a rocky island about 20 kilometres off the coast of Brittany in western France, on a 20-metre monohull sailing boat called Whirlwind.
