Rep. David Scott (D-Ga.) has died at age 80, a senior House Democrat familiar with the matter confirmed to Axios.
Driving the news: Scott served in Congress for more than 20 years, including as the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee from 2021 to 2025.
- But his health was a growing concern for colleagues in recent years, and he was ousted from his committee leadership role after the 2024 election.
- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported his death, citing confirmation from his office, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Axios.
By the numbers: Scott is the fifth member to die in office this congressional session, and the fourth Democrat.
- Former Reps. Sylvester Turner (D-Texas), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) and Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) all passed away last year or earlier this year.
- Scott was facing a large field of primary challengers as younger Democrats nationwide have worked to oust the party's aging leadership.
What they're saying: "The State of Georgia is a better place thanks to the service of Congressman Scott," Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) said in a statement.
- Everton Blair, one of Scott's primary challengers, said Scott "answered the call to serve the people of Georgia's 13th Congressional District with dedication and conviction."
