London Waterloo station evacuated at rush hour after reports of 'suspicious package'

London Waterloo station was evacuated today after a "suspicious package" was found.

British Transport Police (BTP) said officers were called to Waterloo at around 3.53pm, reports say.

The authorities were initially called over a "suspicious package", sparking an evacuation of the station while the object was assessed.

However it later transpired that the item was not dangerous.

Transport for London reportedly cut services on the Jubilee Line between London Bridge and Green Park due to the "security alert".

A BTP spokesman said: "Officers were called to Waterloo Underground station at 3.53pm today following reports of a suspicious package.

"Specialist officers are in attendance and the station has been evacuated while they assess the item."

In a later update, the spokesman confirmed the item was deemed non-suspicious and said London Waterloo would reopen shortly.

Transport for London tweeted: "There is no service on the Jubilee Line between London Bridge and Green Park while we respond to a security alert at Waterloo.

"There are severe delays affecting service on the rest of the line."

A TfL spokesman told The Mirror that services between London Bridge and Green Park had resumed by 4.55pm.

However, "severe delays" are expected to continue.

One social media user, who shared a picture of police at the scene, tweeted: "Major police presence at Waterloo Underground station. Probably best to avoid. National Rail operating normally atm (at the moment) it seems.

"Southwark station also shut. Have been told that there is a bomb alert at Waterloo."

Multiple underground train lines are still experiencing severe delays this evening following this incident.
