London travel news LIVE: Person hit by train causes more rail chaos at Waterloo

A person has been hit by a train between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction, causing travel chaos in the capital this evening.

All lines between these stations are closed while the emergency services carry out their work, with trains being cancelled, revised, or majorly delayed.

Emergency repairs being carried out to damaged track in south-west London was already disrupting trains in and out of Waterloo.

The issue at Wimbledon closed lines running towards Surbiton.

Disruption at Clapham Junction

An earlier obstruction on the track at Clapham Junction means that trains running through the station may be delayed by up to 40 minutes or revised.

The disruption is expected until 20:45.

Circle line update

There are severe delays on the Circle line due to a track fault at Aldgate East.

Disruption between East Croydon and Purley

The fire brigade dealing with an incident near the railway between East Croydon and Purley means that all lines are blocked.

Trains running between these stations may be delayed, cancelled or revised, with disruption expected until around 8pm.

Lines reopen

The emergency services have now completed their work following the earlier incident where a person was hit by a train.

All lines between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction have now reopened - however trains may still be delayed by up to two hours revised or cancelled while service recovers.

The disruption is expected until the end of the day.

No services on the mainline are currently calling at stations between Clapham Junction and London Waterloo after a person was hit by a train earlier today.

Passengers are strongly advised to use local alternatives or speak to station staff who will be able to assist with journeys.

Those travelling towards London can use Great Western Railway services to go via London Paddington, while they can travel between Bournemouth and Reading using CrossCountry.

Passengers can also use tickets to travel between Basingstoke and Reading using Great Western Railway services.

Waterloo to Clapham update

National Rail have confirmed that all trains in the area are at a standstill, and significant delays and cancellations are expected across the network, after a person was hit by a train between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction.

No trains can currently run through the affected section.

Windsor and Reading and Suburban services are suspended, with passengers urged to consider an alternative method of transportation.

Victoria line update

There are currently severe delays on the Victoria line due to train cancellations.

Tickets are being accepted on London Buses, Weaver line, Suffragette line, Great Northern, Thameslink, Greater Anglia and Southeastern services.

Person hit by train in south London

A person has been hit by a train between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction.

All lines between these stations are closed while the emergency services carry out their work,

Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised, with disruption expected through the evening.

Bakerloo line update

There is no service on the Bakerloo line between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone while TfL respond to a fire alert at Harrow & Wealdstone.

There is a good service on the rest of the line.

Disruption between St Pancras and Corby

A fault on a train at West Hampstead is causing disruption to journeys between London St Pancras International and Corby.

The train has been moved, however services are expected to be delayed or altered, with cancellations or revisions expected until around 4.30pm.

It is affecting East Midlands Railway trains on the London St Pancras International / Luton Airport Parkway / Corby route.

Circle line update

There are severe delays on the Circle line due to a track fault at Aldgate East.

Tickets are being accepted on London buses via any reasonable route.

Repairs still ongoing at Wimbledon

Urgent repairs to the the railway are still underway at Wimbledon, closing some lines running towards Surbiton.

Trains running through Wimbledon may be cancelled, delayed by up 20 minutes or revised until the end of the day.

* London Waterloo to Guildford via Cobham: Non‑stop between London Waterloo and Surbiton - not calling at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Earlsfield and Wimbledon.

* London Waterloo to Hampton Court: Non-stop between London Waterloo and Raynes Park - not calling at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Earlsfield and Wimbledon.

* London Waterloo to Strawberry Hill: Non-stop between London Waterloo and Raynes Park - not calling at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Earlsfield and Wimbledon.

* London Waterloo to Chessington South: Non-stop between London Waterloo and Raynes Park - not calling at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Earlsfield and Wimbledon.

* Shepperton to London Waterloo services will be diverted after Fulwell, calling at Strawberry Hill and Twickenham. Not calling at Teddington, Hampton Wick, Kingston, Norbiton, New Malden, Raynes Park or Wimbledon.

Long distance and mainline services:

* Services running between London Waterloo and Woking, Guildford, Basingstoke and further South will not call at Clapham Junction

* London Waterloo to Exeter / Salisbury and return Exeter / Salisbury to Waterloo services will finish and restart at Basingstoke respectively

South Western Railway disruption

Urgent repairs are being carried out to damaged track in the Wimbledon area, which is seriously disrupting South Western Railway trains in and out of London Waterloo.

A number of services are cancelled while others are unable to stop at several stations, including Vauxhall and Clapham Junction.

The disruption is expected until the end of the day, according to National Rail.

Here are the latest delays on the Tube and Overground network, as of 7.30pm:

  • Central line: Minor delays on the entire line
  • Circle line: Minor delays on the entire line
  • District line: Minor delays on the entire line
  • Hammersmith & City line: Minor delays on the entire line
  • Mildmay line: Minor delays between Stratford and Clapham Junction
  • Waterloo & City line: Minor delays on the entire line

There is a good service on all other lines.

Disruption around Surbiton

A fault with the signalling system in the Surbiton area means that some lines towards Woking are blocked.

Trains in the Surbiton area may be delayed or revised, with disruption expected until at least 8pm.

This is affecting a number of South Western Railway services out of Waterloo.

Circle, District and Hammersmith & City line update

Man hit by train had escaped from custody vehicle

Police have confirmed that the man hit and killed by a train had escaped from a custody vehicle travelling from a police station to court.

The man, in his 40s, escaped the transport contractor's vehicle as it was stationary on the A1 motorway, according to Hertfordshire Police and British Transport Police.

BTP was called at about 9.40am during a search of the area, when a casualty was found on the track near Welwyn North railway station.

Formal identification has not taken place, but the man's family have been made aware.

The incident has caused major disruption on rail lines in and out of King’s Cross, which is continuing into this evening.

Circle line running again

The Circle and Hammersmith lines have opened again, albeit with severe delays, following the earlier points failure at Whitechapel.

The District line is also still running with major delays as well.

Disruption towards Gatwick Airport

A safety inspection of the track between East Croydon and Gatwick Airport means some lines are blocked.

Trains running between these stations may be delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised, with disruption expected until 6pm.

Disruption between Stratford and Shenfield

A fault on a train between Forest Gate and Manor Park means all lines are blocked.

Trains running between Stratford and Shenfield may be delayed by up to 20 minutes, cancelled or revised.

The disruption is expected until around 5pm.

Northern line update

There are severe delays between Camden Town and Edgware on the Northern line due to a signal failure at Edgware.

Points failure at Whitechapel causing Tube havoc

A points failure at Whitechapel is causing a number of underground lines to be severely delayed or suspended.

The Circle and Hammersmith & City lines are both currently fully suspended due to the issue, while there is no service between West Ham and Whitechapel and severe delays between Tower Hill and Earl's Court on the District line.

Reduced service on Windrush and Mildmay lines

There is a reduced service on both the Windrush and Mildmay lines today due to a shortage of train drivers.

There has also been a fault with the signalling system between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction on the Windrush line causing further disruption.

Clapham Junction services are cancelled southbound, but additional services may run between Surrey Quays and Dalston Junction.

Disruption remains around King's Cross

Lines have now reopened following a person being hit by a train between London and Stevenage earlier this morning.

However, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes whilst services get back to normal.

Rail replacement buses are in place

Major disruption at London's King's Cross

Major disruption is expected at King’s Cross after a person was struck by a train between London and Stevenage.

Emergency services are currently at the scene, and all lines between these stations have been closed to allow safe access for paramedics.

As a result, train services in the area are subject to significant disruption.

Major disruption is expected to continue until approximately 3pm, with passengers advised to check before travelling and allow extra time for their journey.

Lightning strike near Crewe forces services into London Euston to cancel

Rail services to and from London Euston are facing disruption as the extreme weather has caused damage to signalling infrastructure in the north.

A lightning strike between Crewe, Liverpool South Parkway, and Warrington Bank Quay has led to the closure of all lines in the area while repairs take place.

Services operated by Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway are affected, with delays and cancellations expected across routes linking London with Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Preston, and Liverpool.

National Rail has warned that delays of up to 30 minutes are likely, with disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.

The situation comes during a UK heatwave, which is also putting pressure on transport networks and increasing the risk of further delays.

Passengers are advised to check journeys before travelling and allow extra time.

What is happening on the Piccadilly line?

Piccadilly line passengers have been warned about planned closures throughout the summer, with upgrade work ramping up ahead of the introduction of a new fleet of trains.

The closures will allow essential works to the line’s infrastructure to be completed, including upgrades to its power supply, tracks, depot, platforms and CCTV system.

The partial closures have been mostly planned for weekends, with suspensions running through the Friday Night Tube to the end of Sunday service.

Part closure on the Piccadilly line starts today

A four-day partial shutdown of the Piccadilly line has started today, causing major disruption to passengers travelling to and from Heathrow Airport.

There is no service between Acton Town and Heathrow in either direction, with rail replacement buses running instead.

Travellers are being urged to allow extra time or use alternative routes as disruption is expected to continue through to Sunday.

The closure will allow engineers to carry out major upgrades to the line’s power systems, tracks, platforms and depots ahead of the rollout of TfL’s new fleet of trains.

Transport for London is also carrying out extensive testing to ensure the new trains can run safely and reliably on parts of the network that are more than 100 years old.
