London travel news LIVE: Euston train chaos until end of day after huge Chalk Farm fire

There is major disruption to trains in and out of Euston station after a huge blaze erupted in Chalk Farm.

About 70 firefighters tackled the blaze, which started at about 9.30am in Regent's Park Road. It had been brought under control by about 1pm.

The blaze began at a commercial property, and a neighbouring yoga studio has also been affected, according to the London Fire Brigade.

Disruption on nearby rail lines is expected to continue until the end of the day as a result of the fire.

Avanti West Coast services heading north to Birmingham and beyond may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised, with disruption expected until the end of the day.

Services to Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow are also affected.

Services on Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Overground and Southern had all been disrupted.

Delays on the Mildmay Overground Line have been updated and are no longer severe.

A video posted on X by Sky News shows firefighters working to put out the fire in Primrose Hill earlier, which has caused widespread travel disruptions.

The brigade took 27 calls from concerned members of the public about the blaze at around 9.31am.

It was under control by 1.04pm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

London Northwestern Railway services largely resumed

The service has posted an update on social media about trains disrupted by the fire in Primrose Hill earlier.

It seems things are back to usual but there are a few “residual delays”.

Writing on X, it said: “Normal working has resumed, there are some residual delays whilst the line fully recovers.”

Primrose Hill footbridge partially opened to the public

A social media user has posted a video showing the Primrose Hill footbridge, which goes across the railway tracks to Regent’s Park Road, has been partially opened after the fire.

A large section of the bridge is still closed off to pedestrians with red tape. But a small walkway has been created for the public to use.

Firefighters can still be seen on ladders aiming jets of water at the scorched building.

Due to travel disruptions brought on by the fire in Primrose Hill earlier, travellers can use their ticket on the following services without having to pay more:

  • Chiltern Railways between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street
  • CrossCountry between Reading and Derby via Birmingham New Street, and also between Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly
  • Great Western Railway between London Paddington and Reading
  • LNER between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh
  • London Northwestern Railway between London Euston and Birmingham New Street and also between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh. Please note, London Northwestern Railway are also affected by this disruption
  • Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Preston, and also between Newcastle and Carlisle
  • ScotRail between Glasgow Central / Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh
  • TransPennine Express between Manchester Piccadilly and Preston / Leeds

Network Rail issues another update, saying disruptions expected until end of day

Network Rail had previously said disruptions to services are expected until 5.15pm, but this has been pushed back for a second time.

Railway services are now set to be disrupted until the end of the day due to the fire in Primrose Hill.

Network Rail said in a statement: “Disruption to Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services between London Euston and Watford Junction expected until the end of the day.”

Due to the blaze, some lines are blocked.

Avanti West Coast services running between Euston and Watford may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

The following routes are affected: Between London Euston and Birmingham New Street / Crewe / Chester / Holyhead / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Lancaster / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

Which building was on fire?

Primrose Hill station entrance in 1990 (Johnragla)

The blaze torched a former railway station, Primrose Hill station.

It opened in 1852, temporarily closing during World War I, and finally shut its doors for good in 1992.

Before it finally closed, it was only used by trains running between Watford Junction to Liverpool Street at peak times.

Paltform canopies and the buildings supporting them were knocked down by Network Rail on December 2008, the Ham&High reported.

The building is now home to shops, including a lampshade retailer.

Footbridge and Regent's Park Road still closed

The London Fire Brigade has told The Standard that the Primrose Hill footbridge is still closed to the public.

The service also added that the road was closed, despite the fire being under control.

It said: “Regent’s Park Road remains closed at the junction with Haverstock Hill.”

Train services will be affected until the later time of 5.15pm

Rail services were originally expected to be disrupted until 4pm today.

However, National Rail has shared another update.

Many services will be out of action until the later time of 5.15pm, affecting commuters.

It said there is “major disruption” between Clapham Junction / London Euston and Watford Junction.

There are also disruptions on Mildmay line, Lioness line and Suffragette line services expected until 5.15pm.

Broadcaster said area was 'part of his childhood'

TfL wants to run trains to Stevenage by seizing control of Hertford branch line

Transport for London has unveiled plans that could see the London Overground extended to Stevenage.

Under TfL’s latest business plan, which sets out key projects and spending priorities through to the end of the decade, the transport authority has signalled its intention to take over the inner section of the Great Northern network.

The proposal would see the route become a new London Overground branch, running between Moorgate and Stevenage via Hertford North and Welwyn Garden City.

TfL says the move would allow for more frequent services and adds that it hopes to secure formal Government approval in the coming months.
