London-based street artist Pegasus has paid special tribute to Sinéad O’Connor with a mural following the singer’s death aged 56.
The graffiti mural, located in Waterloo, shows the Irish star posing with the words of her iconic cover song Nothing Compares 2 U emblazoned in red text over the top.
Police confirmed O’Connor was found dead at her home in south London on Wednesday. Her death is “not being treated as suspicious”.
Pegasus, whose real name is Chris Turner, said the mural measures a metre and a half tall and took just over an hour to paint.
Reacting to the news of her death, he said: “The world has lost another icon and extraordinary talent. I will forever remember Sinéad O’Connor as a rebel warrior. Often used as a tool against the mainstream, Sinéad used her voice/platform to speak her truth.
“She did not conform to what her management had planned for her, she chose to live her own path over fame and financial success. She was a punk star in a pop world pitted as public enemy of popular opinion.”
Pegasus has previously created memorials for David Bowie, Prince, George Michael and Amy Winehouse.
Tributes poured in from across the world following O’Connor’s death on Wednesday.
O’Connor was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, which went on to hit number one around the world.
The singer, who was outspoken in her social and political views, brought out 10 studio albums in all that made her a global superstar.
Her death comes just a year after her son Shane passed away last year aged 17. His body was recovered in the Bray area of Wicklow, Ireland, after he was reported missing.
In her final tweet, O’Connor posted a photo of Shane and wrote: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.”
