Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said he “wouldn’t have made” the Jimmy Savile remark made by Boris Johnson towards Sir Keir Starmer - as the prime minister refused to apologise for the slur.
Mr Sunak said it was “right” that the prime minister had clarified his remarks following the departure of his policy chief Munira Murza.
But in an interview with Channel 5 News, Mr Johnson disagreed that his Savile smear was inappropriate.
“All that I’ve said is that the leader of the opposition apologised for the CPS’s (Crown Prosecution Service) handling of that issue during his tenure and that’s all, frankly, that needs to be said on that matter,” he said.
Downing Street’s Director of Communications Jack Doyle also announced his resignation, citing the “terrible toll” that the job had taken on his family “in recent weeks”.
Dan Rosenfield and Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds were the latest to step down from their roles.
