London North Eastern Railway is launching a free pop-up restaurant to celebrate its 100th year

This year marks the 100th-year anniversary of London North Eastern Railway (LNER).

To celebrate the special occasion, the company is offering its customers the chance to “travel back in time” with a free, pop-up restaurant.

The LNER 1923 Restaurant will offer diners a special menu designed to showcase some of the most delicious dishes served to train passengers over the past century and beyond.

It will be set within the Cookery School at The Grand in York, which is where the former headquarters of LNER were.

On Monday, November 6, and Tuesday, November 7, guests will be able to enjoy a three-course meal against the eatery’s historic backdrop that reflects both the flavours and dishes travellers have enjoyed over the past 100 years and the ones we are expected to prefer in the century ahead.

Visitors can expect a supper-club-like experience, with period decor and music that promise to transport them to the infamous roaring Twenties.

Food will be accompanied by the classic 1920s cocktail Bees Knees, a gin-based tipple with honey and lemon juice, some white wine that is currently served onboard LNER trains, and a Gin Fizz for the dessert course.

While the event will be completely free to attend, LNER will be encouraging diners to donate what they might have paid for the meal to York Foodbank. They are also welcome to bring a selection of non-perishable, unopened goods that can be given to the charity.

All customers have to do to book a table is make a reservation via their Eventbrite page

Talking about the exciting pop-up, the customer service and people director at LNER said: “For the past 100 years, LNER’s chefs have created culinary delights for our customers, always striving for excellence.

“Whilst our menu has evolved over the years, our commitment hasn’t wavered, and ‘The 1923 Restaurant’ gives us an opportunity to celebrate this and spotlight the culinary talent we continue to nurture.

“The menu will take guests on a mouth-watering journey through the decades whilst representing the evolution of the LNER brand.”
