London weather LIVE: Hottest June day ever in capital as heatwave sends temperatures soaring

London is experiencing its hottest-ever June day as the blistering heatwave takes temperatures to 36.4C.

The high was recorded at Heathrow, beating the previous record of 35.6C in Camden in 1957.

Meanwhile, a new UK June heat record was set in Wattisham in Suffolk, which reached 36.9C on Friday afternoon.

A red heat health warning is in place for London until 9pm.

The Met Office earlier said highest temperature would be “shift towards east and southeastern England, where maximum temperatures in the shade could exceed 36 Celsius, perhaps rising to 38 Celsius in some places”.

The heatwave has impacted hundreds of schools, shops and offices in London, with many closing on the hottest days.

It is also causing disruption on the railways, with multiple train operators urging passengers not to travel.

The Elizabeth line is running a reduced service between Paddington and Heathrow “due to extreme weather”, according to TfL.

The Met Office has also said there will be high humidity, which would lead to uncomfortably warm, humid nights.

Mr Page added: “Significant disruption to daily life is likely and the public should take every effort to adapt their daily routines to cope with these levels of heat, which up to now have been extremely rare for the UK.”

The east and southeast of England will retain the warmth the longest, although there should be a climbdown in temperatures by Saturday, with peaks around 32C likely.

A more westerly influence on the UK’s weather is expected next week, with a return to more average temperatures for the time of year and a mixture of winds and rain, particularly in the northwest.

No air con added to Tube trains in nearly a decade

09:05 , Tom Place

Sir Sadiq Khan is coming under pressure to speed up the rollout of air conditioning on the Tube as London frazzles in its second heatwave of the year.

With temperatures in the mid 30s, the Mayor of London has been urged to sort out delays in new rolling stock with air con for the Piccadilly line.

Opposition politicians also stressed that this must be a step towards air conditioning on the whole of the Underground network as the capital faces hotter weather due to climate change.

The first of 94 new Piccadilly trains had originally been expected to enter service late last year and to bring in air con for the first time on a deep Tube line.

But this was first put back into the second half of this year and is now expected to happen between December and June next year.

Khan calls for air conditioning in schools and hospitals

07:31 , Tom Place

Schools, offices and hospitals in London should be fitted with air conditioning as heatwaves in the capital become more frequent, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said.

It comes as the mayor unveiled Heat Ready London — a city-wide strategy designed to help the capital adapt and better prepare for extreme heat events.

Climate projections suggest London could face two to three times more heatwaves in the next 20 years, with around one million homes at serious risk of overheating, alongside 1,361 schools, 60 hospitals and 351 care homes.

A report from City Hall urges stronger protections for people most vulnerable to extreme heat, alongside measures to retrofit buildings, expand access to cooling spaces, and strengthen the resilience of infrastructure.

Met Office: Human driven climate change responsible for higher temperatures

07:19 , Tom Place

The heatwave is being driven by a “heat-dome” – an area of high pressure that stalls over a region and traps heat – settling over western Europe and bringing extreme conditions across the continent.

Human-driven climate change, mostly caused by burning fossil fuels, is making such extreme heatwaves more frequent and intense, according to the Met Office.

Bridget Phillipson urges schools to spread water safety message

Thursday 25 June 2026 14:00 , Niva Yadav

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is encouraging schools to reinforce the water safety message to pupils following numerous drownings during this year’s heatwaves.

At least 15 people, mainly children and teenagers, drowned in open water during late May’s hot spell, despite warnings about the potential dangers of cooling off in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and canals.

Ms Phillipson said: “My message to parents and to children is just to be really careful, and I’m working with schools and encouraging schools to share water safety advice and water safety lessons with children.”

She added: “And whilst I understand the desire of people to spend time in open water we just need to make sure we keep children safe.

“I’m encouraging schools to share that material with parents and with children so that they have the best understanding about how to keep themselves safe.”

South East Water have announced a temporary hosepipe ban for people living in Kent amid the heatwave gripping the UK.

In a statement on Thursday, the company said: “Due to high temperatures and record demand for water across Kent, a Temporary Use Ban (hosepipe ban) is now in place for customers in our Kent supply area.”

“Demand for drinking water in South East Water’s Kent supply area has reached very high levels in June, driven by the latest heatwave to impact the region”, they added.

“To ensure that the company can provide a consistent public water service for all its customers in the county, South East Water is moving to restrict the use of hosepipes and sprinklers with immediate effect.”

Residents have been told not to use hosepipes for watering gardens, washing cars, patios and boats and for filling swimming and paddling pools.

Met office says UK could see 45C heatwave by 2056

Thursday 25 June 2026 09:26 , Tom Place

Met Office scientists have highlighted how events such as the infamous summer heatwave of 1976 could become significantly more intense in the future.

That summer remains one of the most significant weather events in UK history, with prolonged periods of heat and drought having a widespread impact on water resources, health and infrastructure.

The Met Office has developed a plausible “2056 scenario”, based on around 2.5°C of global warming, to show how a prolonged heat event similar to 1976 could evolve in the coming decades. - with UK temperatures reaching 45C.

This scenario is not a forecast of a specific future event, but a plausible illustration designed to help to understand how risks could change as the climate warms.

The Met Office’s plausible “2056 scenario” (Met Office)
The Met Office’s plausible “2056 scenario” (Met Office)

Met Office Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher said: “Weather is the national conversation in the UK and the summer of 1976 lives on in many memories. Since then, our climate has fundamentally changed, with average UK summers having warmed by around 1.4°C. Crucially extremes have changed too.

"By using data from Met Office climate projections, we can glimpse into what an event like the 1976 summer would look like in the 2050s. It is a stark realisation to see the maximum temperatures reach 45°C.”

BBC staff urged to work from home during heatwave

Thursday 25 June 2026 09:13 , Tom Place

“This is the highest level of alert. This guidance is specifically for news staff who work in areas covered by the warning.

“If your role is not broadcast-critical and it is possible to do so, we're recommending that you consider working from home if you are in an area covered by the warning.

“If you are in a broadcast-critical role and need to attend a BBC building or work on location: Follow the guidance.”

M25 chaos during heatwave on Wednesday

Thursday 25 June 2026 09:00 , Tom Place

More than 10 people were taken to hospital yesterday after huge queues of traffic were struck on the M25.

Many suffered from "minor and heat-related conditions" following queues caused by a serious crash between a van and lorry.

South East Coast Ambulance Service responded to calls between junctions six and seven on the M25, near Godstone, after a section of the motorway was closed and a man was airlifted to hospital.

The ambulance service confirmed its crews had left the scene after assessing and treating patients, taking 10 to hospital.

Folkestone and Hythe MP Tony Vaughan said that one constituent had been stuck near Oxted for eight hours, adding: "It is 40 degrees in her car. She has kids with her. She is running out of water.

"The person from the car in front has been airlifted to hospital with dehydration. Police seem to be saying it's not their job to give out water."

Khan feels heat over Tube air con 'failure'

Thursday 25 June 2026 07:37 , Tom Place

Sir Sadiq Khan is coming under pressure to speed up the rollout of air conditioning on the Tube as London frazzles in its second heatwave of the year.

As temperatures soared towards 40C on Wednesday, the Mayor of London has been urged to sort out delays in new rolling stock with air con for the Piccadilly line.

Tube passengers suffer 'hellish' conditions in heatwave

Thursday 25 June 2026 07:26 , Tom Place

Commuters are enduring “hellish” temperatures on the London Underground this week, with the scorching heatwave pushing the UK to its hottest June day on record.

Passengers have reported "sweating buckets" in packed carriages, while the extreme heat has been contributing to delays on the network.

The Standard took to the Tube on Wednesday to find out exactly what commuters are facing on their way around the capital.

The Central line once again claimed the crown as London's hottest Tube line, reaching a blistering 39.4C, while temperatures on a number of other lines were in the mid to high 30s.

Sadiq Khan launches capital's first hot weather plan

Thursday 25 June 2026 07:18 , Tom Place

London’s 2022 heatwaves cost the capital an estimated £1.5 billion, according to new analysis from City Hall, as the Mayor unveils the city’s first-ever heat resilience plan.

The findings reveal the scale of the challenge ahead, with around one million London homes at risk of overheating, alongside 1,361 schools, 60 hospitals and 351 care homes in areas most vulnerable to extreme heat.

Now, City Hall has launched Heat Ready London, a city-wide strategy designed to help the capital adapt and better prepare for future heatwaves.

The mayor’s heat plan sets out a range of measures to help London cope with rising temperatures, including expanding access to cooling spaces and public drinking water, and targeting upgrades to high-risk homes to reduce overheating.

The strategy also focuses on increasing tree cover and green spaces, while improving access to rivers and other “blue spaces” for cooling.

It will also strengthen health services and make key infrastructure like transport more resilient during extreme heat.

Khan asks for public to 'bear with us' during heatwave

Wednesday 24 June 2026 15:04 , Tom Place

Sir Sadiq Khan has said that London and the UK as a whole have not adapted to deal with climate change, and urged the public to “bear with us” as they face public transport delays during the heatwave.

He said: “What used to be a once in a generation occurrence, events of biblical proportions, now takes place every year, whether it’s heatwaves, whether it’s flash flooding, whether it’s lightning, whether it’s thunder – we as a city, we as a country, haven’t adapted to be resilient to the consequences of man-made climate change.

“People across the country can expect to see delays in public transport today, tomorrow and the rest of this week that’s a consequence of the extreme heat.

“People across the country I am afraid will have to bear with us – our public transport system is not made for temperatures approaching 40C.

“40% of Tubes are now air conditioned with more going forward. I will be publishing very soon a plan of what more we need to do to deal with heat.”

Met Office warns heatwaves may become more frequent in the future

Rail services to be disrupted into Friday

Wednesday 24 June 2026 12:04 , Tom Place

“Trains are running at greatly reduced levels as there is a significant risk to infrastructure.

“Running a reduced service means there is more resilience in the network and more chance for the rail network to recover.

“Trains which do run may experience significant delays and see very busy conditions.”

Amber weather warning announced for Saturday

Wednesday 24 June 2026 11:42 , Tom Place

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat covering much of east and south-east England on Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees cooler than the previous days, but are still expected to exceed 30C, with peaks between 32C to 34C in London.

Night temperatures are unlikely to fall below the high teens Celsius for most, with some places probably still in the low 20C, while high humidity will continue, the Met Office said.

Red weather warnings are in place until 9pm on Thursday, and amber warnings had already been announced for Friday.

RAC 20% busier than normal during heatwave

Wednesday 24 June 2026 11:15 , Tom Place

The RAC has said it responded to 20% more callouts to broken-down vehicles than usual on Tuesday during the heatwave

Spokesman Simon Williams said: “Tuesday was a very busy day for breakdowns with our patrols finishing the day 20% busier than normal for late June.

“Wednesday is looking even more challenging as more cars are succumbing to the extreme heat.

“We strongly urge people to avoid driving unless it’s essential, as breaking down in these conditions is potentially life threatening if they aren’t properly prepared.

“Being stuck at the side of a hot road without enough water and some form of shade is very serious.

“For this reason our patrols are also carrying extra bottles of water to give to broken-down members.”

Liberal Democrats calls for public buildings to be used as 'cool hubs'

The Liberal Democrats have called for the Government to open air-conditioned public buildings as “cool hubs” for vulnerable people during the heatwave.

They party said that gyms, leisure centres, libraries and other buildings could offer relief for those particularly at risk from the extreme heat.

They have also urged ministers to prepare the country for more extreme temperatures by investing in cooling for hospitals, care homes and schools.

Liberal Democrat MP Pippa Heylings (PA)

Liberal Democrat climate spokeswoman Pippa Heylings MP said: “Cool hubs could be a lifeline for the most vulnerable people in our communities who are struggling in the sweltering heat.

“Public spaces exist to serve their communities and it’s right they should offer refuge during heatwaves.

“Our hospitals, care homes and schools are dangerously hot, these buildings must be fit for a climate that is getting hotter every year.

“It is completely unfair to expect young people to cope with extreme heat as well as increased stress during crucial GCSE and A-level exam periods.”

What is causing the heatwave? Heat domes and Omega blocks explained

Wednesday 24 June 2026 09:55 , Tom Place

The hot weather the capital is experiencing is being driven by a significant area of trapped high pressure building in Europe, known as a “heat dome”.

A heat dome is created when a persistent high-pressure system, known as an omega block, stays over the same area for days or potentially weeks, trapping very warm air underneath it.

The omega block takes its name from the shape of the Greek letter Ω, as it traps hot Saharan air like a lid on a pressure cooker.

A ‘heat dome’ is causing stifling heat in London this week (PA)
A ‘heat dome’ is causing stifling heat in London this week (PA)

It causes temperatures to become hotter and hotter, building through the day as warm air becomes compressed over a smaller region.

These weather systems and their prolonged heat increase the risk of wildfire and heat-related health problems, according to the Royal Meteorological Society (RMS).

What is a red weather warning?

Wednesday 24 June 2026 09:16 , Tom Place

A red weather warning represents an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather expected across a region, with impacts to the general population highly likely.

It is expected that adverse health effects will be experienced, not just by those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to serious illness or danger to life .

There will also be a high risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, with the loss of power and other essential services, such as water, electricity, gas or mobile phone services.

The Met Office has said that "substantial changes" in working practices and daily routines will be required.

This is only the second time a red warning has been issued since extreme heat warnings began in 2021.

Red weather warning now in place
