League of Legends developer has shared an early update for long-term plans to solve multiple underlying issues for the title, hinting at what could become one of the biggest overhauls in the game’s history.
According to the developer, the video was meant to debut in early January, but was shared ahead of schedule in response to early speculation in the community. While the update will not introduce a direct sequel like a League of Legends 2, the work is part of a broader effort to refocus on core player priorities and lay the groundwork for the game’s next era.
Leading the upcoming update is a brand new game client built to integrate directly with the in-game experience, replacing the current client. While the developer has experimented with client reworks before, this effort is positioned as a more comprehensive overhaul. There have been multiple problems with the current client, including high RAM consumption for some players, slow load times, and recurring bugs that have affected performance and usability over the years. All of these issues should be addressed with the new client.
The developer also confirmed a full visual overhaul of Summoner’s Rift, alongside gameplay changes tied directly to those visual updates. This has the potential to fully change the way the game is played as we know it today. Additional changes are planned for runes and pre-game systems, as well as improvements to the new player experience and accessibility.
In our recent interview with Chris Greeley, he admitted that the game can be intimidating to newcomers, so the developer has said now that they feel, after the update, it’ll be the “best time” to bring new players into the game. While the changes aren’t disclosed yet in detail, they could be changes to the existing tutorials and making it easier to digest all the champions.
While the update remains in active development, Riot said more concrete details will be shared next year between MSI and Worlds, including a better sense of the 2027 rollout window. The developers noted that it is still too early to show a first look, asking the community to be patient as work continues. They also emphasized that player feedback over the past year has directly influenced the direction of these changes toward the larger overhauling update.
Launched in 2009, League remains one of the most played competitive games in the world with a very popular esports ecosystem. If this lands the way the developers intend, the overhaul would represent the most significant evolution of the game in years, signaling Riot’s intent to keep the game relevant well into the future.
