Concerns in Nottinghamshire village with 'terrible' roads over serious crashes

Residents in a Nottinghamshire village say crashes there could be due to "terrible" congestion or poor visibility.

Crash Map UK shows there have been nine serious crashes in the village of Ruddington in the past five years.

Comparatively, there were five in nearby Keyworth, three in Cotgrave and two in Plumtree.

People living there cited problems with a lot of street parking, narrow roads and poor visibility at junctions near the High Street as potential factors to the crashes.

George Glover, 85, who has lived in Ruddington all his life, said he thinks driving around the village is difficult.

He said: "The roads here are terrible.

"I should know I've lived here all my life. Parking is always like this, there's cars everywhere, it makes it difficult.

"I haven't experienced any crashes, fortunately. But the congestion is getting worse and worse."

Another Ruddington resident, who didn't wish to be named, told Nottinghamshire Live: "It doesn't surprise me.

"I had a near miss the other day, actually. Someone had gone to turn right onto the High Street from Kirk Lane and had not seen me coming. They pulled out right into the middle of the road and I had to slam my brakes on.

"I don't think the visibility is great around here. The roads are quite narrow, too, especially around the High Street.

"I think that creates problems. You have to be a good driver around here."

Of the serious crashes, six of them occurred on the High Street, or at adjoining junctions such as Kirk Lane and Clifton Road.

Meanwhile, Dave Shaw, 55, said: "You can see the cars everywhere, that's the main problem I feel.

"It's always busy and of course people need a place to park their car. But that does mean that you have people waiting in the road, cars going both ways, it causes problems and crashes.

"Having said that, it is more minor stuff than serious crashes. I think they happen everywhere. You have main roads with people going fast and there are going to be quite bad crashes."
