Local cricket: Old Xaverians hope team spirit can carry them back to Division One

Old Xaverians hope the power of the collective can help them climb straight back into Division One.

The Woolton side, under captain Mark Doyle, slipped to relegation last season on a dramatic last day.

Defending 132 at promotion-chasing Birkenhead Park, Xavs were in with a chance at 93/6, but Park’s quality got them over the line.

But according to Doyle, the fact two sides could have had so little between them in September - only to rock up in April two divisions apart - shows his side have what it takes to bounce back.

Doyle said: “It really was small margins, and with us having the same core group of players, we do take confidence from that.

“It was a very good standard in Division One.

“We’re all looking forward to aiming to win as many games as we can this season, week by week.

“From 2018, when we won this division and went up, a lot of the same lads are there still.

“So we do have the experience, and we’ll be hoping to bring that into this coming season.”

Doyle wasn’t keen on singling out anyone as a potential star performer, adding: “As a collective, there’s a good group of lads, all with fantastic ability to win games of cricket.

“And we’ll be needing each and every one of them throughout the summer.”
