Local company pays tribute to Co Tyrone man who died following Sion Mills crash

A local company has paid tribute to a hugely popular Omagh man who passed away following a road crash in Co Tyrone last week.

Kevin McRory passed away at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Sunday after he was involved in the collision in Sion Mills last Tuesday. Kevin, 77, had been a limousine driver for local company Glendale Limousines.

The company’s owner Nigel McCullagh told Belfast Live there was a sense of disbelief from people locally after hearing of Kevin’s tragic death.

“Kevin was very well-known, he had worked for us for over 10 years,” Nigel said.

“He was a breadman and then we knew him from the family shop next door. He started driving cars for us then.

“Everyone is just in disbelief at the moment since we got the sad news yesterday.

“He was just a character, a real character. He was always good craic and good fun, you never would have seen him in bad humour.

“Kevin was always trying to help people all the time. He was very well-known across Tyrone and was very popular.

“As an employee he was so reliable and honourable, and very popular with everyone that worked here."

Sinn Féin MP Órfhlaith Begley has extended her sympathy to Kevin’s family.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to this man’s immediate and wider family circle at this very difficult time,” the West Tyrone MP said,

“I wish to pay tribute to the emergency services, including the Air Ambulance, who attended the scene last Tuesday."

“The news of yet another tragic fatality on the A5 further re-enforces the need for its long-overdue upgrade.”

A funeral notice for Kevin said he ‘will be forever missed by his sorrowing wife, daughters, sons in law, grandchildren, sisters, brother and many friends’, with funeral arrangements to follow.

Earlier on Monday, police confirmed that a man had died in hospital on Sunday as a result of injuries suffered in the crash on the Melmount Road last Tuesday.

"Police can confirm a man who was injured in a road traffic collision in Sion Mills last month has died," the PSNI spokesperson said.

"The two-vehicle collision on Tuesday, 26th July on Melmount Road involved a white Vauxhall van and a blue Volvo lorry, and was reported to police at around 1.50pm.

“Police, along with other emergency services, attended the scene where the driver of the van was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance. The man sadly passed away in hospital yesterday, Sunday, 31st July.”
