Liz Truss has stood down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
She confirmed that she was leaving the office after a turbulent 24 hours.
Truss had only been appointed as PM at the beginning of September and lasted 44 days in the post, the shortest ever. Truss said there would be a leadership election to replace her “to be delivered within the next week”.
Speaking in Downing Street, she said: “This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.
“We’ve agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week. This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plan and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.
“I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen. Thank you.”
On a day of chaos, her Home Secretary Suella Braverman was sacked after breaking data rules, another one of her aides was suspended and a sixth member of her backbench demanded Ms Truss resign.
But she replaced her with former Home Secretary with Grant Shapps, a leading critic of the blundering PM who had only been sacked himself under Truss.
A fracking poll also descended into shambles after a swathe of Tories vowed to rebel amid claims MPs were manhandled into the chamber to vote for the Government.
Some, including Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg were accused of shouting at colleagues.
A senior Tory last night claimed Ms Truss has “hours not days” left in power, adding: “It is Armageddon.”
She had sacked her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng after the mini-Budget which caused market chaos.
