The Government's promise to increase pensions by at least the rate of inflation appears to be under threat as Liz Truss's administration looks for ways to save money.
The Prime Minister's official spokesman was asked multiple times to guarantee the so-called "triple lock" would remain. The state pension triple lock is a rule that means the state pension must rise each year in line with the highest of three possible figures, inflation, average earnings or 2.5%.
The Prime Minister's spokesman refused to take removing the triple lock off the table saying: "We are very aware of how many vulnerable pensioners thee are and indeed our priority ahead of this fiscal plan is we continue to protect the most vulnerable in society. The Prime Minister and the Chancellor are not making any commitments on individual policy areas at this point, but as I say the decisions will be made through the prism of what matters most to the most vulnerable."
