Liz Truss "caused economic chaos and hardship" during reign says West Dunbartonshire's MP

West Dunbartonshire's MP, Martin Docherty-Hughes has said Liz Truss' disastrous reign as Prime Minister "caused economic chaos and hardship across the country."

Ms Truss resigned this afternoon after a chaotic 44 days in office.

Speaking from a lectern in Downing Street, Ms Truss said she had told King Charles that she was resigning as the leader of the Conservative Party as she recognised she "cannot deliver the mandate" which Tory members gave her little over six weeks ago.

She held talks with the chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservatives Sir Graham Brady and agreed to a fresh leadership election "to be completed within the next week".

"This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plan and maintain our country's economic stability and national security," she added, as she was accompanied by husband Hugh O'Leary. I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen."

Her resignation came just a little over 24 hours after she told MPs she was a "fighter, not a quitter".

And SNP member Martin said: "In just 45 days, Liz Truss’s disastrous reign in Number 10 has caused economic chaos and hardship across the country.

“It’s remarkable that the Truss premiership will go down in history as even worse than Boris Johnson’s.

“Away from this latest circus in Downing Street, my constituents here in West Dunbartonshire are worried about how they’re going to pay their bills.

“Families across Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale are being forced to pay a heavy price for Westminster’s incompetence.

“Scotland hasn’t voted Conservative in almost 70 years, but this is the 5th different Tory Prime Minister we’re going to have imposed on us since 2016.

“It’s only with independence that we can escape the chaos of Tory governments we don’t vote for once and for all.”
