Livingston make fourth summer signing as former Hearts attacker Esmael Goncalves joins Lions

Livingston have signed for Hearts and St Mirren attacker Esmael Goncalves to a two-year deal, with the club having an option to extend by a further season.

The 30-year-old had previously been playing in Bangladesh for Sheik Russel FC and has stints in Uzbekistan, Iran, Japan and India since leaving Hearts five years ago.

Goncalves, who can play as a winger or central in attack, enjoyed a fine spell in the capital, netting 15 times in 42 appearances for the Jambos. He also had a previous stint in Scotland with St Mirren where he helped guide the Buddies to League Cup success in 2013 while on loan from Portuguese side Rio Ave.

Speaking to the club's official website about his new arrival, manager David Martindale said: "I’m really happy to get this one over the line. I was alerted to Esma’s availability a few weeks ago and after some due diligence, I arranged for Esma to fly over and have a look at the club last week.

“I had a very enjoyable chat about football with Esma and knew he would be a good fit for our club. He hasn’t played a lot of football of late but I feel we can afford him that opportunity.

“Esma can play anywhere across the front three but was more predominantly used as a number 9 in his previous spells in Scotland.

“He knows the league well and likes the physicality the Scottish league will throw at him and has an eye for a goal

“I’m confident that Esma, once up-to-speed, will prove to be a valuable member of the first-team squad.”

Goncalves becomes the fourth summer signing for the Lions. Ex-Hearts full-back Jamie Brandon, Aussie centre-back Phillip Cancar and Congo international defensive midfielder Scott Bitsindou have all put pen to paper for the Tony Macaroni Arena outfit.
