Livingston boss David Martindale reveals phone mix-up almost put paid to Mo Sangare arrival

Livingston boss David Martindale has revealed a phone mix-up almost derailed the signing of Mo Sangare.

The Liberian international midfielder put pen to paper on an initial two-year deal earlier this week with the gaffer admitting he had to be won over as the 24-year-old was late for a Zoom call.

But Martindale confessed the new arrival’s personality won him over instantly.

Sangare, who spent last season in the English third tier with Accrington Stanley, was in the process of changing his phone contract which led to his agent sending the meeting details to the wrong phone.

That saw him miss his meeting but the gaffer admitted he was thankful it all worked out in the end as he hailed the signing.

Speaking to the West Lothian Courier, he said: “Mo actually had two phones as he was changing contracts. I’d taken time out of my holiday in Greece with my wife and daughter for this meeting and he was late.

“I was absolutely raging. He was 15 minutes late. I’d texted his agent and told him to just tell Mo to forget it. He got back to me saying he’d texted the wrong phone and wanted to set the meeting up.

“When he came on the Zoom call he just had this big smile and started going ‘gaffer, gaffer I have two phones’ and I just took to him straight away.

“He has such a bubbly, positive personality. He honestly completely turned me around in five minutes and I was smiling listening to his enthusiasm and what he had to say.”

He added: “He was absolutely brilliant. He’s got a good left foot and great energy.

“He’s a good replacement for Stephane Omeonga. Wee Steph had energy and heart but Mo provides a bit more presence and stature in the middle. I feel he is a big signing for us and there’s plenty of room for improvement as we go forward with him as well.”
