‘Living legends.’ Fla. man, 101, honored for service as a first Black US Marine

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- George J. Johnson proudly served as a U.S. Marine Corps military policeman during World War II in the early to mid 1940s.

Like many veterans from that time, however, the 101-year-old Lauderhill, Florida, man never discussed his service much. In fact, many in his family never even knew he was a veteran at all.

“Six years ago was the first time we heard he was a Marine,” said Grace King, Johnson’s cousin and caretaker.
